Trump Acknowledges Reality: My assessment in March 2026

Overview
What I Wrote in March Is Now Playing Out: The Case for Strategic Restraint and Shared Responsibility
On 19 March 2026, I wrote that the United States should exercise strategic restraint in its campaign against Iran and avoid allowing tactical military success to turn into strategic overreach.
A key part of that assessment concerned the Strait of Hormuz. I argued that while the Strait is critical to global energy security, the responsibility for ensuring uninterrupted energy flows cannot rest indefinitely with the United States alone. The countries most dependent on the energy flowing through Hormuz must also be prepared to shoulder a greater share of the responsibility for securing it.
Recent remarks by President Donald Trump bring this issue into sharper focus.

His message to countries facing difficulties because of the disruption around Hormuz was, in essence, that they should look after their own energy requirements and be prepared to act themselves. The significance goes beyond the immediate rhetoric. The larger strategic question is how much responsibility the United States should continue to assume for securing a vital global chokepoint when the economic consequences of its disruption are shared by many nations. My March analysis argued for precisely this reassessment of roles.

The broader argument of the paper was also that military success must be consolidated through strategic restraint, diplomacy and regional cooperation, rather than allowing an operation to become an open-ended conflict.
In that sense, developments today reinforce a point made in my March analysis: the next phase of the Iran conflict will be determined not merely by military power, but by how responsibly the gains are converted into a sustainable regional security arrangement. The question is no longer simply who can exercise power in the region. It is also who is willing to assume responsibility for maintaining stability.
