Serving under Lieutenant General D.P. Pandey has been one of the defining privileges of my life. He was simply a man always in his elements even during command of the challenging 15 Corps. His ability to combine battlefieldtested courage with clear strategic foresight, and a deep concern for the human beings behind every uniform, set him apart as a rare military leader. He read situations through the lens of the multi-domain challenges that security forces face today in many ways ahead of the times.

Reading Soldiering With Passion: An Immersive Military Leader, Lt Gen D.P. Pandey made me realise that, had I read it as a young officer, I would have been motivated to be a better soldier and a more thoughtful leader. Such lived examples stay with us when we serve with or under rare natural leaders, because they show not just tell what leadership with conviction, empathy and integrity truly looks like. His book on strategy is a must-read for middle and senior level military leaders.

For me, he will always remain the soldier's General: firm yet fair, demanding yet deeply caring, and forever willing to mentor the next generation both in person and now through the pages of books that will teach and inspire many more soldiers to soldier with passion.

Few leaders leave an imprint not only on the organisation they serve but also on the lives of those privileged to serve under them. Lt Gen D.P. Pandey is unquestionably one such leader. Having had the honour of serving under him, I can state with complete conviction that he personifies the finest traditions and ethos of the Indian Army. His leadership was never exercised merely through rank or authority, but through personal example, moral courage, professional excellence, and an unwavering commitment to duty. He inspired confidence not by demanding it, but by earning it every single day.

In every operational, administrative and human endeavour, Lt Gen D.P. Pandey displayed exceptional clarity of thought, sound military judgement, and remarkable composure under pressure. His ability to make timely and balanced decisions, even in the most demanding circumstances, earned the absolute trust and respect of every officer, JCO and soldier who had the privilege of serving under his command.

Beyond his professional brilliance, what truly distinguishes him is his profound concern for his men. He firmly believed that the strength of a unit lies in the welfare, dignity and motivation of its people. He knew his officers and soldiers not merely by appointment, but as individuals with their aspirations, challenges and families. His compassion was never mistaken for leniency, nor was his firmness ever devoid of fairness.

I have known DP, as we fondly call him, for over 30 years. Though we have not served together in 9 Sikh LI, our paths have been crossing off and on. DP is a regimental officer to the core, besides being an excellent officer and a gentleman. He has always been a team player and takes everyone along. He finds time for everything and everyone. Sometimes I am amazed at his energy and zest for life. He leads by example be it a senior officer or a Sepoy, he can converse at their level.

I wish this website of his all success and hope he will succeed in creating a base for serving officers, veterans and civil gentry to exchange views and ideas to enhance their knowledge about strategy, tactics, and international and national affairs.
